Sustainability and the future of Small Business: the Willow Review

Sustainability and the Future of Small Business

This week, Fish City owner John Lavery travelled to London to attend the launch of the Willow Review, a groundbreaking initiative that explores the commercial benefits of sustainability and how it can be scaled to support more small businesses. The launch was held on the 4th of June at the historic Caledonian Club and brought together small business leaders from across the UK.

We’re proud to share that John was featured in the report as a case study of how sustainable practices not only reduce costs but improve profitability and build long-term resilience. With rising fish prices and operational costs, sustainability in the fish and chip sector is more than just an ethical and environmental choice– it is becoming a financial imperative with real business benefits.

At the launch, John had the opportunity to engage with leaders and policymakers including Gareth Thomas, Minister for Small Business and Trade, Kerry McCarthy, Parliamentary Under-Secretary for Energy Security and Net Zero, and Nick Stace, Global Head of Sustainability at Barclays.

Drawing from the results of surveys of over 400 small businesses, focus groups, and case studies, the Willow Review offers 14 actionable recommendations to help small businesses, financial services, and government drive sustainable growth. Among the key recommendations is a 5-point plan for small businesses to help them take action. We're honoured to have contributed to this important work as a member of the SME task force, and we’re excited to continue leading by example and being part of the conversation.
